#Classification of Glass by Chemical Composition:
① Soda lime glass. Mainly SiO2, also contains 15% Na2O and 16% CaO
② Aluminosilicate glass. SiO2 and Al2O3 as main compositions.
③ Quartz glass. SiO2 content is greater than 99.5%
④ High silica glass. SiO2 content is about 96%
⑤ Lead silicate glass. The main compositions are SiO2 and PbO
⑥ Borosilicate glass. SiO2 and B2O3 as main components
⑦ Phosphate glass. P2O5 is the main component
PS: ③~⑦ are hardly used for touch screens, so these are not introduced here.

- Float glass:
① Definition of Float Glass:
Float glass uses common glass-making raw materials, typically consisting of sand, soda ash (sodium carbonate), dolomite, limestone, and salt cake (sodium sulfate) etc. After being melted at a high temperature in the furnace, the molten glass flows continuously from the kiln to the molten metal surface, spreading out into a flame-polished glass strips with uniform thickness. After cooling and hardening, it is separated from the molten metal and then annealed and cut into a transparent colorless flat glass.
② The forming process of float glass
It is completed in a tin tank with protective gas, so float glass has a tin surface and air surface.
- Overflow method:
Therefore, the overflow glass has no tin surface and air surface difference.
Soda Lime Glass Introduction

The processing method is float process, also known as float glass. Because it contains a small amount of iron ions,and it looks green from the side of the glass, so it is also called green glass.

Corning Gorilla Glass
It is an environmentally friendly aluminosilicate glass produced by Corning company in the United States.
Japan:
AGC company produces high aluminum glass, Dragon-trail Glass. In south China, it is called “Dragon-trail glass”, however in North China, it is called “Rising dragon glass”.
China:
The high aluminum glass produced by Xuhong Company is called “Panda Glass”.
Chemical Strengthening of Glass
- Principle:
Chemical strengthening is a process that toughens the surface of glass by replacing sodium ions(Na+) with larger potassium ions(K+). The ion exchange creates a thin layer of high compression on the surface which results in a layer of tension in the center. The process is performed by submerging the glass in a molten salt bath(KNO3).
